When’s the last time you updated your capsule wardrobe?? A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing items that allow one to create several different outfits by mixing and matching the same pieces. Check out the key pieces tat can take the modern day fashionista a long way for the cooler weather…

THE CROPPED JACKET

I have plentyyyy in different flavors, and as much as bae makes fun of me for wearing half a jacket when it’s chilly out, cropped jackets are the perfect lightweight layer when you don’t need an entire coat and you want to edge up a casual look.

How to Style It: Pair it with your fave sweater dresses, or with a crop top and sweatpants or jeans. Complete the look with combat boots or your fave sneakers.

Where to Find It: Lionne Clothing, Mistress Rocks

THE THIGH HIGH BOOT

>Shop the Look

If you know me, you know how I feel about my OTK’s!! When it gets cold out, they go everywhere that I go! (I have a whole blog post dedicated to them here! ) Every modern stylista needs a sexy pair of boots that contour and flatter their legs. I always keep at least one flat pair and one heeled pair in a classic color in my closet!

How to Style It: Go for an iconic Nanny Fran inspired look with a bodycon mini dress or a skirt & turtleneck combo, or keep it casual with body-hugging denim jeans and a statement jacket

Wear to Find It: Twelve AM, Simmi

THE LITTLE BROWN DRESS

>Shop the Look

In case you haven’t heard, when it comes to classic colors, brown is the new black. You can catch every brand from major design houses to your everyday fast fashion boutique showcasing their line of staple pieces in shades of nude. When you’re after a sleek look that switches it up from the all-black-ensemble, opt for an earth toned brown dress in a classy silhouette that can take you from the desk to a date.

How to Style It: Pair it with a pair of metallic statement hoop earrings, an envelope clutch, nude or chocolate heels, and a smoky eye for maximum effect

Where to Find It: House of Chic LA, Naked Wardrobe

THE DENIM MINI SKIRT

>Shop the Look

…because they’re back and they’re here to stay! A sexy denim mini is the epitome of “I’m trying, but not too hard.” It’s an easy piece to dress up or down with a simple shoe change, and it allows you to incorporate feminine and chic elements into your casual looks.

How to Style It: Pair it with your favorite crop top or bodysuit & a pair of boots. Simple yet effective

Where to Find It: Broken Land, Shop Nichole Lynel

THE ANKLE BOOT

>Shop the Look

Can’t forget about a shorter length boot for the early Fall vibes! It’s always good to have boots in different lengths, heel heights, and materials to bring some variety into your wardrobe and enhance your options when the weather varies. What I love about the ankle boot is that you can wear it from early Fall, all throughout Winter, and even into early Spring. They’re a worthwhile investment.

How to Style It: Pair it with cargo pants or a hoodie dress when you’re after an edgy streetwear vibe. They can also go with denim shorts, your favorite jeans, or a sexy pair of leather pants

Where to Find It: Simmi, Twelve AM

THE LAIDBACK JOGGERS

Another essential part of your “effortless” collection, a pair of joggers with a relaxed fit will get you through those says where you couldn’t care less what you’re wearing, but you have to care because you have great impressions to make and goals to reach.

How to Style It: Take a page out of T. Ray’s book and dress it up with platform heels and a statement bag, or let your sneakerhead side show with an athletic shoe and a cropped jacket (See how the capsule wardrobe works together??) Follow T. Ray while you’re at it and check out my interview with her here!

3 EASY WAYS FOR TODAY'S MINIMALIST TO MAKE THEIR LOOKS SPRING WORTHY

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE

IMG_8693.jpg

Spring has sprung! For those who like to keep it simple with their style, this vibrant season can tend to be a bit intimidating. You may find yourself wanting to incorporate new seasonal trends into your style without wandering too much outside your comfort zone. Here are a few simple ways you can show you’re embracing Spring without altering your entire wardrobe…

PASTEL POLISH

IMG_8691.jpg

Tell your nail tech you’re in a springy mood and make sure you see every pastel color they got in the shop! Pastel colors are one of my personal fav ways to show I’m embracing the season changing. Wearing pastel polish with darker colored items also breathes new life into some of your shoes & accessories that would typically be seen as Fall/Winter pieces.

VIBRANT HANDBAGS

IMG_8699.jpg

For those who like to stick with all black or neutral colored ensembles, slinging a statement bag in a bright color over your arm can be an easy way to break up the monotony of your look and add some excitement. Plus, the bigger the bag, the bigger the conversation around it.

BUSY PRINTED SHOES

If you’re not yet comfortable experimenting with prints on your tops, bottoms, and dresses yet, a cute sandal or ankle boot in an interesting pattern can be a starting point for you to learn what types of prints you’re drawn to.

QUICK TIPS TO LEVEL UP YOUR LITTLE BLACK DRESS GAME

STYLED BY SHARRA GREENE

“The little black dress expresses a moment of freedom and individuality every time.”

- Andre Leon Talley

IMG_8408.JPG

I don’t play about my LBD’s! Little black dresses are such an essential part of my wardrobe in every aspect, from casual looks to work uniforms, to formal wear. I’d like to say I’ve become a pro at wearing this classic staple. Here are some tips to remember when shopping & styling the little black dresses in your life…

WHAT MAKES THIS ONE DIFFERENT??

I only buy little black dresses that have that little extra something special. Whether it be some fringe detail on the sleeves, a sexy cut out, or an interesting neckline, I make sure all of my dresses have that one thing that takes it past basic. Applying this when shopping for a LBD will make you more excited to wear it when the time comes.

Shop the look: Dress, boots, bag, lipstick.

IT’S ALL ABOUT GIVE & TAKE

Have work dresses that are a little too plain or modest for your normal aesthetic off the clock? It’s all about balance. Try pairing them with edgy accessories to give a modern spin on your more classic pieces.

SOMETIMES IT’S JUST THE SHOES, SIS

An amazing pair of heels can instantly take a boring dress from a 5 to a 10. I believe every girl should have that go to stiletto or even block heel that elevates her whole fit, both literally and figuratively. Kinda like what Bey was saying about the freakum dress…

I hope you enjoyed these style tips! I got some spring style content making its way to the blog very soon! Stay tuned, my loves! 💋

STOP HATING ON "THE OVERDRESSED FRIEND": WAYS TO NAVIGATE THE COMMON DRESS CODE ISSUE

WRITTEN BY SHARRA GREENE

IMG_7949.jpg

“Overdressed is a social construct created by your haters” - some well dressed clever person on Twitter

I’ve been on both sides; the girl showing up to the function in a dress and heels and getting mean mugged and snarky comments, with people asking “Where you going??”, and the girl who showed up in sweats but is hyping my homegirl up telling her how she looks tf good tonight! Regardless of what I’m giving with my personal style, I’m always happy to see my peers show up in what makes them feel their best. So the whole "she doing too much” thing rarely ever comes from me. More times than not, that comment gives off insecure vibes.

Though I believe a part of having great style comes from knowing how to adapt your style to different settings, I definitely think it’s important to show respect for your differences with the people you care about, and personal style is no exception… especially as women. We receive so much hate and negativity coming our way, the least we can do is give each other our props when we step out looking right. Here are a few ways I navigate this common issue among my friends…

SEND A QUICK GROUP TEXT TO DETERMINE THE VIBE FOR THE OUTING

IMG_7780.jpg

This is an actual screenshot from my group message with my girls. We all love to get cute, but we also each have different styles and may not all be in the same mood that day so it’s always a good idea to confirm the dress code so no one feels like they didn’t get the memo.

RESPECT EACH OTHER’S AESTHETIC

output_EKSnq8.gif

Understand that what’s super formal to you may just be dressy casual to your friend, and vice versa. We each have different ways that we like to express our selves with our personal style and that’s more than okay… Just because someone may like to pair some heels with their jeans while you may go with your fave sneakers because you value comfort, that doesn’t necessarily mean that person is trying to “one up” you. We all have a right to step out in whatever makes us feel like our best selves.

EMBRACE BEING “THE OVERDRESSED FRIEND”

b93b43aaae72afde4fe0e301c03dec48.gif

Don’t be peer pressured into turning down ya steez just because some haters wanna police your fashion choices. Embrace the stigma because getting dressed up for life is something to be proud of! One of my fav brands, House of Rehab, has some super cute tees & accessories, specifically designed with “the overdressed friend” in mind. Check em out below.
